Ahmedabad Police on Monday registered a case against the spectator which invaded the pitch and tried to hug India’s star batter Virat Kohli during the ICC World Cup 2023 final.
According to the local police, the case has been registered against a person named Wen Johnson at Chandkheda Police Station, Ahmedabad.
The accused described himself as a big fan of Virat Kohli and had come to watch the match. Since he is a huge admirer of the former Indian captain, he crossed the railing and went into the ground.
A case has been registered against the accused under sections 332, 447 of IPC for unauthorized entry into the stadium of Gujarat Cricket Association.
It must be noted that the pitch invader was wearing a shirt which stated ‘stop bombing Palestine’ on the front and ‘free Palestine’ on the back. He was also wearing a mask which had the Palestinian flag printed on it.
On October 7, 2023, an armed conflict broke out between Israel and Hamas from the Gaza Strip after the latter launched a multi-pronged invasion of southern Israel.
The Israeli military retaliated by conducting an extensive aerial bombardment campaign on Gazan targets, followed by a large-scale ground invasion of Gaza. The current hostilities constitute the fifth war of the Gaza–Israel conflict, which is part of the broader Israeli–Palestinian conflict.
Earlier on Sunday, Australia won a record-extending sixth 50-overs World Cup title after opener Travis Head smashed a brilliant ton to secure their six-wicket victory against India.
Asked to bat first, India rode battling half-centuries by KL Rahul and Virat Kohli to post a below-par 240 all out in exactly 50 overs at a packed Narendra Modi Stadium.
Australia suffered a top order wobble of their own but Head's 137 off 120 balls saw them romp home with seven overs to spare in match that never reached great heights.
